I don't know about you, but I have quite a few friends that have trouble with waiting (okay, a LOT of trouble with waiting). I have tried just about everything when I decided to design a program especially for one of my little guys. We practice waiting before gaining access to anything- now you might say "hey, well don't I already do that?" and sure, you probably do... but this is a little bit more intensive and effective.
Here's a little social story about "waiting":
Here's a little social story about "waiting":
I introduce this story in the morning, then we practice. He must wait with quiet hands for 10 seconds before sharing his morning news, getting a piece of work, obtaining a reward, etc. and so on. It teaches him that he has to wait for things and we are hoping to extend his wait time.
I also have a "waiting chair" in my classroom (pic to be added later)! The chair has the wait picture taped to it and he must sit in the chair to wait, with a timer, for EVERY transition. In and out of work area, lunch, therapies, recess. It gets him used to the feeling of waiting and weans him off of constant adult attention.
So for a recap....
HOW TO TEACH WAITING
1. It's Time to Wait Social Story
2. Transition seat (waiting chair)
3. Wait card for sticky situations!
4. Quiet hands and WAIT before EVERYTHING

Eventually, you will be able to fade the supports, lengthen the waiting, and prepare your student for the future :) Waiting is an important lifeskill! You can grab my " It's Time to Wait" social story in my TPT STORE, HERE!
That's all for now!
